2018 commemorated the centenary of the tragic execution of Tsar Nicholas II and his family in Yekaterinburg on the night of the 16th July in 1917 at the hands of the Bolsheviks.

The Royal family of Romanovs were in power of the Russian Empire for more than 300 years and saw it grow, change and develop throughout centuries. Having strong connections with other royal families all over the world, Nicholas II being Georges V’s first cousin, the Romanovs always had strong influence on the course of historical events. Their death was a shocking and tragic event that changed the course of history not only in Russia but the whole of Europe.

Follow the steps of the Romanovs from their establishment on the throne in Moscow and creation of magnificent St Petersburg to the heart- wrenching events of 1918 in Yekaterinburg.

St Isaac’s Cathedral is the largest cathedral in the city and dominates the skyline of St Petersburg. Designed by a French architect and taking 40 years to construct, it is the 3rd largest domed cathedral in the world! St Isaac’s is decorated with mosaics, painted ceiling murals, bronze gilt statues and is surrounded by 112 monolith granite columns, which were transported from one of the suburbs of the city. Now the cathedral houses a museum, but for the Major Orthodox holidays Religious services are still held here.

Founded in 1723 by Peter the Great, Yekaterinburg is the third largest Russian city and the capital of the Urals. The cultural and architectural influences of European and Asian civilisations come together in this fascinating and cosmopolitan landscape. The last Russian Emperor, Nicolas II Romanov and his family spent their last days here. On 19th July 1918 the whole family was executed by the Bolsheviks in the basement room of the Ipatiev’s estate. Nowadays there is the Cathedral On Spilt Blood which provides a powerful insight into the turmoil of the Russian Revolution.

One of the main Romanov attractions of the city, this grand church commemorates the sainthood of the family. It was built on the place of the Ipatiev House where Nicholas IIand his family, as well as the members of the household, were assassinated. Designed in the style of Byzantine Revival, this beauty forever captures the end of the whole era.

Day 1 FLY TO ST PETERSBURG

Welcome to St Petersburg, the key city of the Royal Russia. Our drivers will meet you at Pulkovo Airport and take you to the hotel. Check in and spend your first night relaxing or exploring the city at your leisure.

Day 2 ST PETERSBURG

654564564545After breakfast at the hotel, meet your tour guide at the reception and set off to explore the magnificent St Petersburg. St Petersburg owes its birth to one of the most famous Romanovs - Peter the Great. Uncover the story of the creation and making of the new capital and delve into the milestones of the Romanovs’ rule in the magnificent city on the Neva river. See Peter and Paul's fortress, the birthplace of St Petersburg and the burial ground of the Romanov tsars and tsarinas, Church on Spilled Blood built on the place where Alexandr II was tragically murdered on his way to sign the first draft of the constitution along with other gems of the city. This evening will be an opportunity to visit the world famous theatres of St Petersburg and see an opera or a ballet performance. Meal Included: Breakfast.

Day 3 ST PETERSBURG

download 2Spend a day out in Peterhof (middle may - early autumn) or Pushkin (autumn - early spring). Peterhof, also known as Russian Versailles, is famous for its palaces and a myriad of fountains. Look out for the „Joke Fountains‟ – if you step on the wrong paving stone, you will get wet! You can also enjoy the picturesque view of the Gulf of Finland. Pushkin is a home to Catherine’s Palace and Park, the symbols of Russian Imperial chic and might. Explore the unique interiors designed by renowned architects and delve into the lavish lifestyle of the monarchs. Meal Included: Breakfast.

 

Day 4 ST PETERSBURG

images 1Enjoy the world-renowned works of art in Hermitage, the winter residence of the Russian monarchs and the second largest art and culture museum in the world! Stand back and surround yourself with one of the world’s largest art collections. View masterpieces from the all time greatest painters including Da Vinci, Monet and Michelangelo. In the evening we will board a train and head off to the capital of Russia! Arrival and check in. Meal Included: Breakfast.

 

 

Day 5 MOSCOW

moscow 04After breakfast in the hotel set off for your first Moscow adventure – the city tour. Visit the cradle of the Romanov dynasty and explore its highlights in every detail. Meal Included: Breakfast.

 

 

 

Day 6 MOSCOW

ppjournal0219 2Visit the Kremlin with the Cathedrals where the first Tsar of the dynasty took the throne in 1613 at the delicate age of 16. The highlight of the visit is a chance to see the treasures of the Armoury Chamber which still houses many personal belongings of the Imperial family. Meal Included: Breakfast.

 

 

 

Day 7 DEPARTURE TO YEKATERINBURG

An opportunity to explore Moscow independently. Your train journey to Yekaterinburg starts in the evening and covers a part of the famous Trans-Siberian line. Relax and enjoy the view behind the window. Meal Included: Breakfast.

Day 8 YEKATERINBURG

Arrive at Yekaterinburg and have an evening of the independent exploration of this beautiful city. Meal Included: Breakfast.

Day 9 YEKATERINBURG

Visit the Church on Blood Cathedral, built on the site where Nicholas II and his familly were shot and the Monastery of Ganina commemorating the tragic events of 1918. Depending on your choice, you can either board a train to start your Tobolsk adventure or spend an evening exploring Yekaterinburg. Meal Included: Breakfast.

Day 10 YEKATERINBURG/TOBOLSK

Option 1 Spend day exploring Tobolsk, a historic capital of the Siberia region, with your guide. The town boasts a unique Tobolsk Kremlin and was a home for Nicholas II and his family while in exile. In the evening board the train back to Yekaterinburg.

OptIon 2 Alternatively, take a trip to one of the main attractions of the region: the Europe-Asia border. Stand with one leg in each continent!
